Input Parameters

Edit the example values. Results update as you type.

Enter circuit voltage for single phase and line voltage for three phase.

Enter a decimal greater than 0 and no greater than 1.

The aluminum-conductor table starts at 16 mm².

Reference table range: 10–60 °C.

Allocate a voltage-drop budget to this section.

The ampacity reference table uses PVC 70 °C conditions.

Used for steady-state voltage drop; verify against manufacturer data.

Formula

Iᴢ = Itable × ktemperature · Iᴢ ≥ max(Iᴮ, Iprotection) · ΔU% = ΔU / U × 100%

Substitution

Iᴢ = 34 × 1 = 34 A ≥ 30 A;ΔU = 2.027% ≤ 3%

Calculation Steps

  1. Determine operating and known protection currents, then look up reference ampacity by material, phases and installation method.
  2. Ambient-temperature correction factor: 1. Voltage drop is estimated at conductor temperature 70 °C and reactance 0.08 Ω/km.
  3. Check corrected ampacity and steady-state voltage drop at each size; select the smallest cross-section meeting both requirements.
